Honestly, I cannot even remember what we had for dinner on the boys' birthday the first year or the second. Truthfully, life with twins is pretty chaotic, and those whole entire first two years are pretty much a blur to me now. As crazed as our life currently is, it is soooo much more sane than it was a year ago -- let alone two years ago. Life feels at least somewhat manageable at this point (on most days at least!!). Thus, it seemed to me that it was now time to start the tradition of the Birthday Dinner for the Birthday Boys. Those of you who know me know that I love to cook, and that I'm a pretty decent cook, (and that my skills are currently WASTED on my twin now-three year olds who unfortunately don't seem to appreciate my capacities in the kitchen)... you can probably imagine how much I would enjoy the ritual of being able to cook my boys' favorite meal for them each year. For their first "real" Birthday Dinner tonight, we had hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad, watermelon and strawberries. We even ate on paper Go Diego Go plates (Kyle specifically asked that I squeeze his ketchup straight onto Diego's face, and place his mustard squarely on Baby Jaguar). The highlight for the boys, however, was that they got to drink their own bottles of "beer" (Perrier waters in real green glass bottles). Kyle and Owen each cleaned their Diego plates and told us numerous times that the dinner was "delicious!" and "so yummy!" and "their favorite!" I am really looking forward to the year sometime in the far distant future that Kyle and Owen get to choose their birthday dinner and they request baby-back-ribs on the grill ~~~ or terriyaki glazed salmon ~~~ or steaks with mushrooms and blue cheese butter ~~~ or linguine with white clam sauce ~~~ or ~~~ or ~~~ or ~~~ (the list is endless). But this year, at age 3, hot dogs it was. And nothing could have made all four of us happier.
